Did you know that the sweet manufacturer Haribo is a German firm? Or that the Volga is the longest river in Europe?
If not, then you need to tune in to the Scottish Parliament at 1pm on Monday 12 May to test your European knowledge against the combined brain power of 124 of Scotland’s primary six pupils who will be battling it out as part of this year’s Euroquiz.
A total of 31 teams representing primary schools from Shetland down to the Scottish Borders will answer a wide range of questions on everything from European politics and geography to culture, sport and history in their bid to be crowned prize winners of Euroquiz 2014.
Deputy Presiding Officer and Euroquiz quizmaster John Scott MSP said:
“I am delighted that the Scottish Parliament is hosting the final of this event and congratulate all the pupils on winning a place in today’s final, and the hard work they have put in to get here today.
“Each year, the school children from across Scotland put many to shame with just how much they know about our place in the world and our increasingly globalised and multicultural society. With the European elections taking place on 22 May, this is an interesting time for all of us to assess what we know about Europe.”
The Scottish European Educational Trust (SEET) has been running the quiz since 1993 and this is the seventh year the event has been held at the Scottish Parliament. The event is sponsored by the European Parliament and the Scottish Government.
Minister for Learning, Alasdair Allan MSP said:
“I’d like to warmly congratulate all the teams who have reached the national final of the 2014 Euroquiz. This quiz is a great opportunity for our young people to learn more about Europe and its history, culture and languages and I’m delighted to see teams from every corner of Scotland taking part.”
Each of the 31 Scottish schools taking part in the quiz have already won their local authority round and will be competing against the winners of all the other heats in the final.
