Scottish Parliament opens its doors to celebrate 20th Anniversary

27.06.2019

People from across Scotland are invited to help the Scottish Parliament celebrate its 20th anniversary as it throws its doors open for a fun filled day at Holyrood on Saturday 29 June.

A whole host of activities will take place on the day including live music and dance, retro games, and a rare opportunity to go behind the scenes of the Parliament and sit in the Presiding Officer’s seat.  Delicious food and drink from across Scotland will also be available.

Sessions will be hosted on ‘The Future of Scotland’ where guests can remotely control robots of the future, experience 3D Holograms, or discuss their aspirations for Scotland for the next 20 years.

There will also be panel debates, including a Festival of Politics session which discusses the concept of ‘Happiness’.

Looking ahead to the event, the Parliament’s Presiding Officer, the Rt Hon Ken Macintosh MSP said:

“Our focus has always been for this Parliament to be open and accessible for all and what better opportunity to open our doors than for our 20th Anniversary celebrations.

“There truly is something for everyone as we celebrate our birthday and play host to the best of Scottish culture.  There’s music, dance, food, games, talks, birds of prey and you can even sit in my chair. And best of all it’s free!

“So, come help us toast 20 years of your Parliament for what promises to be a great day out for all.”

The 29th of June will also see the launch of the Parliament’s latest exhibition, ‘Parliament & You’. This interactive exhibition explores how people feel about key changes in the law since 1999 and how these have impacted people’s lives.

The celebrations take place from 3.00pm-8.00pm and entry is free.

Earlier in the day the Parliament will welcome Her Majesty The Queen and His Royal Highness The Duke of Rothesay, Prince Charles, for a ceremonial event held in the Chamber.  You can watch that live on the Scottish Parliament’s website.
