PE01732: A toolkit for working with the Pathological Demand Avoidance profile of ASD

Petitioner: Patricia Hewitt and Barbara Irvine

Date Lodged: 21 August 2019

Calling on the Scottish Parliament to urge the Scottish Government to-

1. Draw up in co-operation with others, a toolkit for professionals to assist in diagnosing and designing therapeutic support for children, young people and adults who have Pathological Demand Avoidance, a profile within the autism spectrum

2. Offer training in the use of such a toolkit and additionally to signpost, promote and facilitate other training by those who have successfully developed therapeutic programmes

3. Provide access to appropriate education, therapies and interventions to reduce or minimise the effects of the condition for the individuals and their families and carers.

Have you experienced a lack of awareness and education among health and education care and learning teams, or other professionals on providing support people with PDA?

What positive results do you think could be delivered by the development of a PDA toolkit?

Who do you think should be involved in developing the toolkit?

The lack of understanding around PDA extends well beyond the failings of the Scottish Education system. This condition is so poorly understood that individuals and families are being placed under intolerable amounts of stress having to fight against misjudgements and mistreatment from across all aspects of society. I am hoping that the development of this PDA toolkit will be the start of real change that will educate people to fully understand the range of challenges being faced and what is the correct approach to take to offer support. I hope that everyone with an interest and willingness to get involved will be able to contribute towards the development of this vital resource.

PDA is a real condition. Show it the respect it deserves and provide support and resources to help.

These children and young adults are being failed by the system and its not fair on them or their families. They deserve so much more

PDA continues to be an unknown condition even to those working in the education system. Just a naughty child is usually the response! Time to get real in the Scottish Education system! Hope J S is reading this!

This is a much needed service. PDA is still such a new diagnosis that most professionals have never even heard of it. For that reason parents aren't being heard and in turn are directed to the wrong services.

Teachers need much more training and support in order to deal with all the issues that children with PDA have to deal with in their lives.

A young primary age family member has been to two primary schools and is now home schooled because the education system is not able to meet their needs. Family has found nobody in the education system so far that knows what they are doing for a child with PDA. It has been up to family to provide resources and sign post to resources for those who have worked with family membr but unfortunately it's not taken on board and they have suffered. There needs to be a complete overhall of the system.

PDA IS REAL, Too many parents, claimed by medical & educational professionals. sent on loads of parenting courses being told how to parent children etc. Family were were only took 4 years to get family member's correct diagnosis to be told, ignore everything you were tought on the wont work or will make them worse. Family knew that.we they had been telling everyone else that for 4 years. because it's not yet in diagnosis manual there is far too many differences depending on the professional you deal with & also it's a postcode lottery. Children deserve every opportunity to live their lives to their best potential without either killing themselves intentionally or accidentally or another individuals because they cant cope with life.
