PE01744: Psychiatric service dogs in Scotland

Petitioner: Karen Mercedes Greer

Date Lodged: 16 September 2019

Calling on the Scottish Parliament to urge the Scottish Government to recognise the valuable role psychiatric service dogs can play in helping people recover from trauma and mental ill health, and to fund a pilot programme of accredited psychiatric service dogs in Scotland.

Petition History:

10 October 2019:  The Committee agreed to write to the Scottish Government. It also agreed to write to the Bravehound charity, Assistance Dogs UK, International Guide Dogs Federation, Society for Companion Animal Studies, Dogs for Good, Dogs for Depression, Psychiatric Assistance Dogs Foundation and the Mental Health Foundation. Official Report of meeting 10 October 2019

19 March 2020: The Committee agreed to close the petition under Rule 15.7 of Standing Orders on the basis that there are several small organisations in the UK training PADs, such as BRAVEHOUND, which is effectively the pilot project that the petitioner asks for, and that the correspondence received from Dogs for Good and the Scottish Government suggests that other actions to address mental health are likely to be more effective, less complex and less expensive than the petitioner’s proposals for funding PADs. • What difference do you think psychiatric service dogs could make to people with mental health problems?
  • Who would benefit most?
  • How should their training be accredited?
  • Who should provide this training?

I've found reading dogs to be very successful so it would be good to have dogs working with trauma patients as they are a calming influence
