A debate about the future of Scottish sport with Scotland manager Gordon Strachan will help to kick off this year’s Festival of Politics, as its three day run begins today at the Scottish Parliament (Thursday 18 August).
During a packed programme, with a central theme of The Architecture of Democracy, a series of events will look at what makes democracy tick with panels on the role of the media, special advisers and civil servants. Topical issues under the spotlight will also include the refugee crisis, the race to the White House and the effect of Brexit.
Key names attending to offer their highly unique and experienced insight into the world of politics and beyond will include Sir Vince Cable, Chris Mullin, and Baroness Susan Greenfield.
The fictional world of political intrigue will also be examined, with producers of hit drama Borgen discussing the show alongside a screening of the first ever episode.
The Scottish Parliament’s Presiding Officer, Ken Macintosh MSP, said:
“The Scottish Parliament is offering festival goers the chance to engage with politics, politicians and leading policy makers. From Brexit to Trump versus Clinton, the Festival of Politics is your opportunity to debate and discuss the big issues of the day.
“This year the Festival will cover diverse topics from an exploration of the refugee crisis, to art, neuroscience, music, journalism, sport and Minecraft.
“For the first time we will also have events for the whole family including a chance to add your brick to a giant vertical Lego map of Scotland.”
The Scottish Parliament’s Garden Lobby will once again be transformed into the Festival Café Bar, which will, this time, have its own giant LEGO® map of Scotland as well as a programme of music, choirs, poetry, exhibitions and dance.
