Financial Scrutiny

Scrutiny of Scottish Government spending is a core part of an MSP's parliamentary role in committee, in the Chamber and as an individual Member.

The Financial Scrutiny Unit provides independent analysis and support to committees of the Scottish Parliament and to individual Members on budgetary trends and issues, including independent costing of specific spending proposals, and providing research on all areas of the economy and public finances as they affect the Scottish Government and Parliament.

The Financial Scrutiny Unit's remit covers:

  • supporting Members undertaking effective budget scrutiny;
  • producing financial costings and analysis; and
  • providing economic information and analysis.

The Financial Scrutiny Unit produces briefings on a range of areas such as the economy, finance, local government, and the business environment.  These briefings can be located under the appropriate headings on the Research Briefings by Subject page.
