Year of Young People 2018


About the evidence session


At its meeting on 17 April 2018 the Committee agreed to hold a one-off round table evidence session on 26 June centred on the Year of Young People 2018 and their views and priorities in health and sport.  Prior to the formal session on 26 June, the Committee also took part in fact-finding visits at selected schools and colleges.  Further details noted below in the timetable section.


The Committee agreed as part of its work on this topic to conduct fact-finding visits.  The fact-finding visits provided Members with an opportunity to gather the views of young people on their priorities in health and sport. 

The scheduled dates were as follows:-

4 June 2018

> Sunnyside Primary School, Glasgow

> Clyde College, Glasgow

> Longstone Primary School, Edinburgh

> Drummond Community High School, Edinburgh

> Scottish Parliament evening session with young adults (aged 17-26)

11 June 2018

> West End Primary School, Elgin

> Moray College UHI, Elgin

26 June 2018

Formal round table evidence session.  The following organisations were invited to attend:

> Children and Young People's Commissioner Scotland

> Barnardo's Scotland

> Scottish Youth Parliament

> Young Minds

> Who Cares Scotland

> sportscotland

> Healthcare Improvement Scotland

> Scottish Childrens Services Coalition

> Children in Scotland


A short targeted call for views was issued on 11 May with the following questions:

> How well are the views and interests of young people taken into account in health and sport policy?

> What are the priorities of young people in health and sport?

The deadline for written submissions was 15 June.
