How Scotland can tackle climate change and what realistic changes could be made to peoples’ behaviour to help the environment is to be the subject of a public meeting in Glasgow.
The Scottish Parliament’s Environment, Climate Change and Land Reform Committee is currently looking at new legislation on the issue which has set a target of a 90 per cent reduction in all greenhouse gases by 2050. The informal workshop will take place at 5.30pm on Monday 10 September in the Albany Centre and will allow the Committee to gather views on the proposals.
The Climate Change (Emissions Reduction Targets) (Scotland) Bill includes a series of steps towards achieving a 100% emission reduction in the future. It also introduces more challenging interim targets, including a 66% drop by 2030 rising to 78% by 2040. Scotland's original Climate Change Act of 2009 set targets to cut 80% of harmful emissions by 2050.
Deputy Convener of the Environment, Climate Change and Land Reform Committee, John Scott MSP said:
“Scotland has long been at the forefront in the fight against climate change and the new targets in the proposed legislation continue that approach.
“We want to hear a wide range of views on whether the new targets and interim targets are strong enough, as well as the steps needed to achieve net-zero emissions in the future, and what changes we’ll need to make in our day-to-day lives.
“This is why we are visiting Glasgow, to hear from people in their own communities, about what they think of the proposals. This will play a key part in forming the Committee’s view on the legislation and letting people have their say.”
