The BBC is established by Royal Charter. The current 10-year Charter runs until the end of 2016.

The Scottish Parliament, along with the Scottish Government, has a formal consultative role in the process of reviewing the BBC charter. In carrying out this role, the Committee is undertaking an inquiry focusing on the Scottish aspects of charter renewal.
