What has the Scottish Parliament done?

Here are a few examples of what has been done in this area:

Legislation

This is a bill to restate and amend the law relating to the disclosure of criminal history and other information by the Scottish Ministers and to make amendments to the Protection of Vulnerable Groups (Scotland) Act 2007. This bill has currently completed stage 2.

This act imposes a duty on local authorities and Scottish Ministers to prioritise activity aimed at reducing inequalities in attainment for school pupils, and gives a legal basis for the Scottish Government’s National Improvement Framework, aimed at improving the information available to pupils.

This act abolished tuition fees for certain Scottish graduates. The ‘graduate endowment’ fee had been introduced by the Education (Graduate Endowment and Student Support) (Scotland) Act 2001.

Committee inquiries

The Education and Culture Committee found that many pupils with a visual or hearing impairment were not getting the same opportunities as their peers. Among other things, it recommended that additional support be made available, including teachers having a basic level of understanding of sensory impairment, and ensuring there are the appropriate numbers of teachers who are qualified at the highest level.
